The disaster occurred when the train, operated by the Secretariat of the Navy, was heading to the municipality of Matías Romero with about 250 passengers on board. For reasons still under investigation, the locomotive derailed between the town of Nizanda and the Salina Cruz route, causing the four cars of the convoy to leave the tracks and fall into a small ravine. President Sheinbaum, at her usual press conference, called for avoiding speculation after a video filmed by a passenger went viral, suggesting the train was traveling at excessive speed. 'The black box has the speed it was going and everything that happened,' stated the head of state, assuring that her government will act with 'seriousness and responsibility.' To guarantee the transparency and future safety of the service, the president announced that the Navy will carry out a thorough review of the tracks before resuming operations, which are currently suspended indefinitely. The Isthmus Corridor is under scrutiny. The Interoceanic Train, which connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, was one of the flagship works of the Andrés Manuel López Obrador administration, designed to compete with the Panama Canal in the transport of cargo and passengers.
